The story of two brothers, Lee Jin-tae (Jang Dong-gun) and Lee Jin-seok (Won Bin). Jin-tae is engaged to Young-shin (Lee Eun-ju). When North Korea invades, Jin-seok is drafted into the army, and when Jin-tae fails to prevents this he decides to join the army as well so that he can protect his brother. Jin-tae learns that if he is awarded the highest military honor, he will be able to get his brother out of the army. To do so he volunteers for suicidal and dangerous missions. But his brother not realizing why he is doing so increasingly becomes disillusioned with the monster that he views his brother is becoming. Back to Young-shin, in the maelstrom, she attended a rally for the communist party to obtain food. Once the South Koreans retake the area, she is accused of being a conspirator. The two brothers valiantly try to save her but fail. During the North Korean attack that follows Jin-tae is knocked unconscious and believes that his brother has been killed. In bitterness Jin-Tae defects to the North Koreans, which use him for propaganda value. Jin-seok, who survived, tries to bring Jin-Tae back to who he was. Jin-Tae is redeemed and tragically dies on the field of battle.
