Two convicts, the rugged Joe Blake (Bruce Willis) and nervous Terry Collins (Billy Bob Thornton) are not only best friends, but cell mates. But when a spontaneous prison break leads Joe and Terry from the heart of a jail cell to the heart of suburbia, they begin their criminal lives anew. The plan? To become the notorious “Sleepover Bandits” by holding up the bank managers at their own homes, spending the night with them, and making an early start to the bank the next morning while it is empty. Problems begin when a beautiful, yet slightly neurotic, housewife Kate Wheeler (Cate Blanchett) stumbles her way out of her dull marriage and pushes her way into the criminal duo, only to find a place in the heart of Joe, and eventually Terry. The tension and conflict rises as both convicts strive for Kate's love, all the while robbing banks and becoming the nation's most wanted criminals. But their scheme begins to lose inertia as the bank managers learn that Joe and Terry are more docile then they seem, so one last robbery is planned at the Alamo bank, where everything falls apart, and Joe and Terry have no place to turn.
