With the hope of erasing all of the bad memories that remain from his time in World War I, William Foster (Gene Hackman) enlists in the French Foreign Legion. He has been assigned the task of protecting a team of archaeologists. Together with his team of Legionnaires, they man a small village which appears to be the ancient burial site that is thought of as sacred to the Arab people. When the local Arab leader, El Krim (Ian Holm) finds out that this site is about to be dug up, he is enraged. He gathers together as many surrounding Arab tribesman and launches an attack against Foster and his men. Though greatly outnumbered, the Legion holds on but they are in desperate need of reinforcements. Will they be able to hang on until help arrives?
