A mysterious container is found in the woods near the Swedish town of Ystad. Inside lies a horrible sight: the container is packed with people, both adults and children, all suffocated to death. Police with crime inspector Kurt Wallander (Krister Henriksson) in charge finds out that the group consisted of illegal aliens and that they were still alive when the container was abandoned - thereby making the case a mass murder. Because the container had been reported stolen earlier and the victims carried no documents that could help to identify them, Wallander is left with almost no clues as he starts to examine the sensitive case.
